Orange County Breakers lose in season opener against Washington Kastles, 22-18


Irvine, Calif.- July 9, 2012 - The Orange County Breakers started the 2012 season off with some strong play but it wasn't enough as they dropped their season opener 22-18 to the defending WTT Champion Washington Kastles on Monday night at the Bren Events Center. The Kastles, who were 16-0 in 2011, have not lost a World TeamTennis match since July 22, 2010.

In the opening set, Lindsay Davenport and Travis Parrott lost a tough doubles match 5-1 against Washington’s Anastasia Rodionova and Leander Paes. It was a long day for Paes who finished his Wimbledon mixed doubles final late Sunday night and flew more than 5,400 miles from London to Los Angeles on Monday.

Davenport also returned home from Wimbledon Monday afternoon just in time to win her women’s doubles match with partner Anna-Lena Groenefeld. Groenefeld and Davenport made a comeback and won their doubles set in a tiebreaker (5-4) against the Rodionova sisters, Anastasia and Arina.

Paes and Bobby Reynolds teamed up to give the Kastles a 5-3 victory in men's doubles over the Breakers' Travis Parrott and John-Patrick Smith.

Groenefeld was impressive in her singles showdown with Anastasia Rodionova, resulting in a crowd-pleasing set win 5-3 for the Breakers.

Trailing 17-14 going into the final set, Smith tried to rally the Breakers but Reynolds edged him 5-4 to give the Kastles the 22-18 victory.
