Orange County Breakers secure top seed in the Western Conference Finals after a victory over the Boston Lobsters
Irvine, Calif- July 27 2012- With a 21-13 victory over the Boston Lobsters, the Orange County Breakers are headed back to the WTT playoffs for the first time since 2009. Tonight's win gave the Breakers the top seed in the Western Conference Finals on Sept. 14 at the WTT Finals Weekend presented by GEICO in Charleston, South Carolina.
John-Patrick Smith made a strong comeback after being down 1-3 in men's singles against the Lobsters' Jan-Michael Gambill before winning 5-3.
Jana Juricova then defeated the Lobsters' Irina Falconi in a strong singles set, 5-2 to bring the overall match score to 10-5 after two sets.
Smith paired up with Lindsay Davenport for a tough mixed doubles set against the Boston Lobsters duo of Eric Butorac and Carly Gullickson-Eagle. The Breakers dropped the mixed set 5-1 to take a narrow 11-10 lead after three sets.
Davenport and Juricova were down 1-3 in their women’s doubles set against Falconi and Gullickson-Eagle, but came back for a 5-3 set win.
The Breakers' Travis Parrott and Smith closed out the match with a strong men's doubles win against the Butorac and Gambill, 5-0, for the 21-13 victory and a spot in the post-season playoffs. The Breakers last home match will be Saturday against the Philadelphia Freedoms featuring Mark Philippoussis at the Bren Events Center on the campus of UC Irvine at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available at www.breakerstennis.com or by calling 949-205-9526.
